Privacy Policy
In short
- Page Companions never sends information off your computer. It has no servers, analytics, advertising or tracking.
- It saves only its own settings and the companions' state, in Chrome's extension storage on your computer.
- So that 财神爷 (God of Wealth) can nap while you're away, it uses Chrome's idle detection, which reports only whether your computer is in use, idle or locked.
- It never reads the text, images or link addresses on the pages you visit, and it never sells or shares data.
What Page Companions saves on your computer
Everything below is kept in Chrome's local extension storage on your computer (chrome.storage.local). It isn't synced to your other devices and is never sent to the developer or anyone else.
| What | Details | Why |
|---|---|---|
| On / Off | Whether companions are switched on (enabled) | So your choice applies on every page |
| Chosen companion | Ragdoll cat, Quby & 菜猪, or 财神爷 (companion) | To show the companion you picked |
| Companion positions | Where each companion was last on screen, as screen coordinates, and the size of the browser window at the time (position.cat, position.duo, position.caishen) | So a companion comes back where you left it |
| Page in use | A random code for the page you used most recently (position.owner). It isn't the page's address. | So only one tab saves where the companion is |
| 财神爷's ingots | How many gold ingots have dropped, are waiting and have been collected; when the next one drops; the times of recent drops; a random number that decides where ingots land; and short-lived notes while one is being collected (caishen.world) | To keep one shared count of ingots across all your tabs |
| Your computer's activity state | The latest state Chrome reported (in use, idle or locked) and the time it last changed (also in caishen.world) | So 财神爷 rests while you're away and wakes when you're back |
Page Companions doesn't save the addresses or content of the pages you visit, and nothing it saves identifies you.
Your computer's activity state
Page Companions uses Chrome's idle detection (the “idle” permission). Chrome gives the extension only one of three states: in use, idle (no keyboard, mouse or touch input anywhere on your computer for five minutes), or locked. It doesn't reveal what you were doing, which keys you pressed or which apps you used.
The extension keeps only the latest state and the time it changed, replacing the previous one, so no history builds up. It follows this state whenever Chrome is running, even while another companion is chosen or companions are switched off, and uses it only to send 财神爷 to sleep and to wake him up.
What it uses on a page without saving it
While a companion is on a page, the extension uses the following inside that tab. None of it is saved or sent anywhere, and it's gone when you leave the page.
- Where your mouse, pen or finger is on the page, so companions can look toward the pointer, react when it comes near, and be petted and carried.
- Whether a link, button, form field or similar control sits under a companion, and which element has keyboard focus, so the companion can step aside or fade instead of blocking the page. It looks only at the kind of element and where it is, never at its text, pictures, link address or anything you typed.
- Whether the page is showing a pop-up dialog, so the companion can get out of the way.
- Scrolling, the window's size and whether the tab is visible, so companions stay in view and rest in background tabs.
- Key presses only to check for the Escape key, which cancels carrying Quby & 菜猪. Nothing you type is recorded.
- The web address of the current tab, only when you open the toolbar popup, to show the site's name and to tell you when companions can't appear there.
What Page Companions doesn't do
- Send any data to the developer or anyone else. It makes no network requests at all.
- Use analytics, advertising, tracking or cookies.
- Run code from the internet. Everything it runs is included in the extension.
- Read the text, images, links, form entries, passwords or cookies on the pages you visit.
- Collect your name, email address, location, browsing history or any other personal information.
- Sell or transfer data, use it for anything other than the companions, or use it to determine creditworthiness or for lending.
What websites can see
The companion is drawn in a closed part of the page that the website's own scripts can't reach, and websites can't read the extension's storage. A website can tell that Page Companions is installed, because the companion is added to the page and its pictures and stylesheets come from the extension.
Permissions
| Permission | What it's used for |
|---|---|
| Read and change all your data on all websites | Chrome's wording for running on the pages you visit. Page Companions needs it to place the companion on web pages (addresses starting with http:// or https://, in the main page only). It adds its own companion and checks what's underneath it so it doesn't block anything. It doesn't read or change the page's content. |
| Storage | Saves the settings and companion state listed above, on your computer. |
| Idle detection | Lets 财神爷 rest while you're away, as described above. |
| Alarms | Wakes the extension's background script for the next ingot drop. |
| Active tab and scripting | Used only when you click the toolbar button: to show the current site's name, and to add the companion to a tab that was already open before you installed or updated the extension. |
Removing your data
Uninstalling Page Companions removes everything it saved. Switching companions off removes them from your pages but keeps your settings, so they come back as you left them.
Changes to this policy
If Page Companions changes how it handles information, this page will be updated and the date at the top will change.
